All of Pete’s senses snapped to attention at once like a shock running up his spine and he raked in a ragged gasp. He sat bolt up and looked around, disoriented, as his heart thumped painfully against his ribcage. Quick breathing sounded almost like whimpers in the sparse hotel room. It was like every nerve in his body was twitching with anxiety. After a few more minutes of silence, punctured only by his slowing gasps, Pete closed a hand over his slightly damp face finally recognizing his surroundings. His eyes slid shut and he fell back onto the soft bed relief beginning to flood his system.
