Kurogane walked down the sidewalk under the glow of the street lamps, a bag of bottles in one hand, as Fai said his farewell to their new friend.
“See you later Caldina! Thanks for the great alcohol!” he waved cheerily through the bar’s door before turning to catch up with his companion. After a few hasty steps Fai’s left foot buckled with pain and he paused flinching. It was excruciating and Fai was now certain it had been badly sprained during their earlier encounter with the demons outside Clover. He walked on hiding his discomfort behind his smile and willed himself to keep up with Kurogane. Fai wanted to take his mind off his ankle so he tried to strike up a conversation.
“Nice night huh?” he said.
“Mmm” Kurogane grunted in response. Fai sighed not surprised by the lack of words Kurogane used in his reply.
“How like big bow wow to say something like that” Fai commented thoughtfully, “So we have to look out for an attractive young man. Not exactly very helpful information, I mean one attractive man is much like another, even people with cloaks here aren’t that unusual especially with new arrivals like us appearing all the time. I wonder who he is maybe-” Fai rattled on in this manner for quite a while.
“Are you still in pain?” Kurogane’s deep voice seemed to resonate in the empty street. Fai opened his mouth to answer when Kurogane turned to face him straight on. His carmine red eyes watched Fai’s face as if trying to decipher whether Fai’s answer would be the truth.
“I’m swell Kuro-” Fai said but was cut off before he could finish.
“Does your foot still hurt?” he repeated his gaze hardening.
“No” Fai lied with a simper “That ice made it as good as new” There was a moment of silent scrutiny between them.
“Fine” Kurogane said shortly holding out the bag of alcohol filled bottles. Fai couldn’t hide his disappointment as he took the bag feeling the extra weight immediately strain his ankle further. He stared down at the bag gloomily, holding it with both hands.
“Come on then”
Fai looked up to see Kurogane kneeling before him, his right arm held out.
“What?” Fai said confused as he took one small step back. Kurogane stepped foreword gently wrapping his right arm around Fai’s legs lifting him, Fai folding over Kurogane’s strong shoulder as the dark ninja stood. Fai was briefly rigid with surprise before relaxing. Kurogane moved his hand to Fai’s lower back to hold him steady before turning to continue their walk home.
“It seems Lord Blackies swordsmanship isn’t the only sharp skill he has” Fai said cheerily stating how quick Kurogane was at picking up others moods and feelings. The throbbing in Fai’s foot died down a bit once the weight had been lifted from it and he sighed greatfully.
“Don’t drop the bag and don’t squirm” Kurogane ordered tightening his grip.
“How like big bow wow to say something like that!” Fai laughed patting Kurogane’s back.
“Stop squirming and stop calling me that!”
“What? Big bow wow?”
“Rrrrrrrrrrrr!”
“Ha ha ha!”
I wrote this because ever since becoming a kuroxfai fangirl I felt this scene was missing from volume 6 when Fai hurts his leg and later we find out that Kurogane has kindly carried him home over his shoulder. Every time I read it I thought “Where’s the bit where Kuro offers his help?”. I tried to do a doujinshi about it but it wasn’t up to my standards so I abandoned the idea opting for a fanfic instead. I could have chosen to make it fluffier but i wanted it to seem as though it came from the manga.
